[...] There’s a great conversation happening on darrenbarefoot.com and robcottingham.ca about whether one can ’support our troops’ without ’supporting the war’. I really encourage y’all to check it out - it’s very interesting. Tags: canadian forces, peace, war [...]

Great post Rob.

Consider me among those who are "just naive enough to think we can someday hope to have these discussions in an environment more nuanced and more honest than the one we have today..."

At some point we're bound to get sick of arguing over headlines and soundbytes, and we'll learn, instead, to debate the actual ideas behind them.

Thanks for the linkage and thoughtful commentary. Much like the conversation on my site, I don't have a lot to add, but I think it's a topic worth examining (obviously).

It's because of my snobbish, protected West Van upbringing, but I'm always vaguely shocked when I meet someone who's been in the military. It was so not on our radar growing up, as Douglas Coupland put it, 'in kidney-shaped swimming pools the temperature of blood'. You're the second bloggy/Web 2.0 person I know who's served (Robert Scales is the other).
