Now blogging at Civic Minded

Category: Blogging; Politics

I’m pleased to announce that I’ve begun blogging at Corante’s Civic Minded blog, your guide to the political impact of the web. My inaugural post begins like this:

When I worked in a Member of Parliament’s office back in the early 1990s, our office – like those of our colleagues – was inundated with an unending stream of petitions, pre-printed form letters, faxes and actual mail. Sifting through it all took up a huge amount of time (and incurred more than a little staff resentment).

These communications varied wildly in impact. We often took the effort required by a particular medium as a rough proxy for the level of sender’s depth of feeling and commitment. A personally written letter, for instance, carried a lot more weight than a lowly mass-printed postcard, which was maybe a little more significant than a petition.

And if a tangible, paper-based petition is unlikely to soften the flinty hearts in the corridors of power, you can how much hope their electronic kin have. Point-and-click protest is so easy to do – and for that reason, just as easy to ignore in the face of so many competing demands for attention.

So my heart usually sinks whenever I receive yet another appeal to go sign yet another e-petition. With a very few exceptions (such as the petition to change Canadian Alliance Leader Stockwell Day’s first name to “Doris” in 2000), and despite the hopes of their sponsors, they almost always wrap up without making a dent in public policy.

But now British Prime Minister Tony Blair seems interested in rescuing the lowly e-petition from irrelevance. Earlier this month, his office launched a remarkable experiment with online petitions.

Do you have spare winter clothes? Someone needs them.

Category: Vancouver

I’ll let Kate do the talking:

There are some really cold people in Vancouver right now. I was struggling trying to figure out how I could get my extra scarves, blankets and hats to them because my car won’t drive in this stuff. Then I thought I would call some car rental places. I ended up talking to someone at the Car Coop and it looks like they might lend me a car.

I need to get a sense of numbers and I need to keep it all in one place. This is going to be a lot to organize. So, if you have stuff that I could come pick up, please let me know by replying to this ChangeEverything.ca post.

Also will you do what you can to spread the word? We’ve gotta move quick. These folks are having a really hard time. Please consider sending this email to all the people you know in Vancouver who might have an extra scarf or a couple of bucks – it will really make a difference to some folks who are having a really hard day today. (plus they might get a visit from me ;)

Kate

ps – if you or someone you know wants to help me out, I’d be glad for the company.

My first glass of post-advisory water

Open them taps! The advisory’s been lifted!

Vancouver Coastal Health says we can now drink the water again:

On the recommendation of the Medical Health Officers of Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health, the boil water advisory that has been in effect for Vancouver, North Shore and Burnaby is now lifted for these areas. Hospitals, care facilities, schools, food premises and the public are no longer being advised to boil drinking water or to use an alternate drinking water source. There is no boil water advisory for any area receiving water from the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD).

They recommend running unused taps for three minutes, partly to clear your pipes and partly because your plumbing’s spirit cries out for release. (You have to read between the lines of their news release for that second bit, but it’s there.)

Congrats to my fellow Vancouverites, and to that elderly, frail woman I shoved at Costco, may I just say: you were right, ma’am, you were ahead of me, and may I say that for an 89-year-old, you have one helluva spinning back-kick.

I guess it wasn’t one of the steel ones.

No worries: we’re all okay. But last night’s storm wasn’t kind to our magnolia. (You’d think they weren’t intended to live in a winter climate or something.)

Why? Great posts like this one:

I just registered for YAWTPOS (Yet-Another-Web-Two-Point-O-Service .. apologies to Yahoo!) and I received the following email:

Congratulations on your successful registration! You can now start doing ABC and XYZ – and blah, blah, blah, blah blah … and for future generations to come.

[...] This irks me in a couple of ways …First … tongue planted firmly in cheek … with the inconsistent state of software on the web, I actually feel like sometimes I should be congratulating *them*.

Congratulations, I was able to successfully register on your site. Your registration system correctly identified which fields were mandatory and didn’t ask me for any overly personal or unnecessary information up front. Better yet, it didn’t crash my computer and your confirmation email didn’t end up in my spam folder.

Second, why isn’t anyone *thanking* me? I’m a fickle, time-starved, choice-rich consumer! For heaven’s sake, there are over 300 choices in the cereal aisle alone. If I take the time to register on your site and try to engage with your service, I would like to be thanked.

As impressed as I am by the gumption of round-one-winner Vancouver Housing Market in gainsaying the established business wisdom on real estate here in Bubblotusland, Kate’s consistently solid advice, insight and passion carry the day for me.
