While Parliament, the Supreme Court of Canada and the overgrown reptilian hindbrains of certain politicians struggle to grasp the changing definition of marriage, the Canadian Oxford Dictionary has updated its listing without batting a lexicographical eyelid.
The new definition now simply reads “the legal or religious union of two people.”
(The previous definition, “a hellish state of sexual frustration and emotional blackmail,” was formally withdrawn after a sub-editor’s successful counselling, reconciliation and course of pharmaceutical therapy.)
It’s good news for anyone who supports equality and dignity. Whether the dictionary’s decision to also list a definition for the word “lesbigay” is a step forward or backward for human rights remains to be seen.
