Today, as Chris Booke at Virtual Stoa reminds us in his Dead Socialist Watch, is the anniversary of the execution of Imre Nagy:
Imre Nagy, Prime Minister of Hungary, hero of 1956, condemned for Right Deviationism and deposed by Krushchev’s tanks; born in Kaposv?°r, Hungary 7 June 1896, hanged in Budapest, June 16, 1958.
After his revolution was crushed by Soviet troops, Nagy took refuge in the Yugoslav Embassy. He and several followers received a false promise of safe passage out of the country from his successor; they were arrested as soon as they left and tried in secret.
