The latest numbers are in, and – ta da – more people bought Macintosh computers than IBM computers during the second quarter of 2005.
For Mac fans like Derek, that’s a bittersweet victory. Whereas IBM was once the avatar of the Mac’s competition, it’s now barely in the running; in fact, IBM-branded personal computers are now made and sold by a Chinese company that bought the business from Big Blue.
Still, a victory’s a victory… right?
Not if you open up those Macs and look at their oh-so-rapidly beating hearts, the PowerPC microprocessors made by… IBM. Curses! Even when we win, we lose!
Maybe that right there is the real reason Apple is moving toward Intel processors: so, just for once, the Mac gets a clean, clear victory over its ancient rival.
