I’ve downloaded the trial of the latest version of Apple’s iWork 08 productivity suite, which introduces Numbers. This spreadsheet app is being described as Excel lite. While I haven’t run up against any limits yet, I’ve only been using it for 15 minutes and I’m already in the throes of infatuation.
Why? Because when I wanted to delete a range of data a moment ago, I selected it, pressed the delete key… and it vanished.
Do the same thing in Excel on a Mac, and only the first cell empties. I can’t find a keystroke combination that will do what “delete” does in virtually every other app around. And yes, I can customize it in Excel’s Tools/Customize menu, but come on, guys – whatever happened to expected behaviour?
It’s a little sad that my first surge of excitement over an app is that it acts the way it ought to.
On a Mac laptop if you select a range of fields and hit the delete key while holding down the function key you’ll get a full wipe. On a desktop keyboard there must be on of the F keys that does the same thing.
Or, at least that’s the way it works on my machine.
Ah, at last. Thanks for that tidbit, James!
