This just came in from Mo Dhaliwal at
VIBC – and rePercussion looks like it would have been
amazing. And there’s lots more happening, too.
| On behalf of everyone at VIBC, it is my pleasure to welcome you in to the HSBC City of Bhangra! Tonight, we open the festival by presenting a project that is dear to our hearts and core to the message of our organization… rePercussion. rePercussion – Tonight Produced with support from the City of Surrey and as a key component of the HSBC City of Bhangra Festival, rePercussion will take our guests through a journey of rhythms and drumming styles that traverse the lower mainland and, therefore, the globe! If you haven’t bought tickets yet, there will be some available at the door. Just come to the Surrey Arts Centre for 7pm – it’s first come, first serve! Bhangra on Main – Tuesday, June 5 @ 7pm Then, I’d like to tell you about a very special musical event taking place on Tuesday, June 5th at the Heritage Hall on Main Street. In partnership with Music on Main, we are proud to present “Bhangra on Main”. This evening will showcase Punjabi music in a more intimate environment than you may be used to. You will see the UK’s Dalvinder Singh present an evening of live vocals, accompanied by guitar, mandolin, tabla and dholak. Dalvinder will take us through some of the folk songs that he learned early in his career, some raw versions of his more recent work, and other songs that inspire the spirit of his music. The bar opens at 7pm and the show begins at 8pm and ends at 9pm, so come early and get comfortable! Whether you’re a Bhangra enthusiast or even if you’ve never heard any Punjabi music before… this truly will be a wonderful night of stirring music in a beautiful setting: Of course, there are a number of free events taking place in Surrey as well, such as the Mehfil Night, Celebrate the Harvest and Bhangra House, all from Friday through to Sunday this weekend… and there’s plenty more happening next weekend. Just check www.CityOfBhangra.com for a full listing. I hope you’ll join us at as many of these events as you can make it to. If we don’t see you tonight, I especially hope to see you at Bhangra on Main on Tuesday night. Thanks for being with us on this journey. Building bridges and finding a place for Punjabi folk arts in this region’s arts and cultural scene has taken hard work, but when we look at our Flickraccount… it really makes it all worthwhile ;) Happy dancing, Mo Dhaliwal Chair Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society |
