A nice turn of phrase today from Paul Wells: “Legalizing gay marriage is the right thing to do, as Liberals sometimes realize when their assignment is to take back a seven-point Conservative lead in mid-campaign. That job having been completed, apparently the Liberals aren’t so sure any more.”
He’s referring to a leaked federal cabinet document indicating the government is afraid that “the media will continue to highlight every example of diverging opinions within the Liberal caucus and in cabinet over what approach to adopt”.
During the election, Paul Martin made unqualified support for same-sex equality a litmus test for whether a politician is fit for public office. I happened to agree with him on that point. The difference between me and his government, I suppose, is that I still do.
